The Home's History in Greensboro, NC
Built in 1958/1959, the home was a ‘Gold Medallion Home’ touted for its comfort, safety, ease, cleanliness, convienence, economy, and maximum home value.
Over the last number of years the home stood empty and the gardens were neglected. Some upkeep was continued – the original structure remains sound, HVACs were updated and the limited siding was replaced with vinyl. A couple of the sliding glass doors on the upstairs back of the home were removed along with the balcony. Unfortunately the kitchen had been changed out with new cabinets by the original owner to a traditional cherry theme due to differing sized replacement appliances. Later – along with the removal of the doors and balcony the garden was stripped and the retaining wall that protected the backyard from significant erosion was knocked down.
There was also the elephant in the corner – a swimming pool. It’s still there – under the backyard. We don’t know what form factor it is in. Whole – broken up – we have no idea. We have heard from the neighbors that the previous owner dug part of it up last year and at least one wall is intact. Code here says that it was supposed to be broken up. No idea what actually is looming underground. We will see.
Our first order of business is the yard. We have contractors coming in this afternoon – Holliday Builders Greensboro – to drop off the equipment for the big excavation. For the most part we do our own work but this is beyond our expertise. We are recreating the wall and french drains that served the home well for many years past. We are putting in gardens over the pool – herbs, vegetables, and flowers galore – as well as a seating area and fencing to deter the local wildlife (deer and geese mainly) from eating the above plants. We will see what’s down there soon.
Wish us luck. We are going to need it.
Our initial plans are to recreate the back yard with the installation of a new retaining wall. It’s spring and the garden calls.
